GeMMe - ULiège

GeMMe Research Group is part of the Urban and Environmental Engineering (UEE) Research Unit at Université de Liège (ULiège). GeMMe brings together a team of engineers, scientists and technicians from different disciplines specialized in georesources, mineral engineering and extractive metallurgy.

GeMMe contributes to the development of innovative processes for the efficient management of mineral and metallic resources, while providing unparalleled upscaling experience in urban ore characterisation and processing (with a focus on innovative sorting techniques and hydrometallurgy) derived from a long research tradition in the processing of primary ores.

Contribution to CiSMA

ULiège GeMMe leverages its PICKIT sensors to collect data on scrap samples with VNIR camera (hyperspectral colour of scraps), 3D camera (shape, size and volume), dual X-ray (density and mass of the fragments) and LIBS (information about the alloying elements or pollutants).

Following data collection, a sorting campaign on PICKIT will use approximately 500-1,000 Kg of scrap with significant amounts of contaminants. After the assessment of the quality of each sorting campaign, an existing AI algorithm will be updated and retrained to correct any potential errors. The obtained products will be analysed by manually extracting relevant samples and analysing their composition.
